A historical journey of a hundred years, Altamonte starts with Union and Confederate Veterans of America’s Civil War becoming homesteaders in a desolate region of then Orange County during the early 1870s.
Altamont soon found itself a neighbor to a posh resort for snowbirds. Built by wealthy Bostonians for those wanting to escape the frigid northern winters, Altamonte the resort became home to a world-class hotel, a famed hotel that, for seventy years, was the hub of a resort that evolved into the city of present-day Altamonte Springs.
Altamont and Altamonte Springs, however, were merely a beginning and end. In between were such intriguing places as Hoosier Springs, Sanlando Springs, Palm Springs, The Springs, Pinecrest, and the four quarters of “Sanlando: The Suburb Beautiful.” Each was a creation of remarkable men and women, all of whom found their way onto the pages of Altamonte: A History of Altamonte Springs.
